Quarry operation
The various segments of the road construction industry are major users of raw materials. Following the acquisition of two quarries, one sandstone and the other limestone, the Wanty Group is now better able to manage its supplies by monitoring closely the quality of the materials subsequently used in the manufacture of asphalt or in road base courses.
The Lahonry quarry, near Couvin, produces sandstone for road wearing courses. The La Thure quarry at Solre-sur-Sambre is a limestone quarry producing aggregates for road foundations, concrete plants and base courses for bituminous surfaces. The La Thure site has its own concrete plant, complementing those operated by Satea.
These two « small » quarries supply some 350,000 tonnes of raw materials a year, both for the Wanty Group and for many other public and private sector customers. Their relatively remote location means that they do not suffer major problems with nearby residents. Environmental protection is also high on the list of priorities.
As part of the on-going quality control process, the stones produced from these two quarries are either analysed on site or in the Enrobés du Centre laboratories. Research is conducted into continuous improvements in grain size, shape index and dust formation. The two companies benefit from membership of the Wanty Group in terms of regular investment in civil engineering equipment and machinery.
Lahonry quarry, 33% acquired by the Wanty Group in 2003 in conjunction with Pirlot of Chimay and with Mr. Paternoster, owner of another quarry at Lompret, who brings with him his extensive operational experience.
La Thure quarry, a family company operated by the Wéry family and acquired by the Wanty Group in 2006.
